Biography

Dr. Schlemmer earned his primary medical degree (MBChB) from the University of Pretoria, followed by a Master of Science in Otorhinolaryngology from the University of Kwazulu Natal and a Fellowship of the College of Otorhinolaryngology of South Africa FCORL (SA) (with distinction). He has over 14 years of experience in otorhinolaryngology and is particularly interested in Otology and Neurotology and Lateral Skull Base and Head and Neck Surgery. He has traveled extensively to study under the tutelage of international experts such as Professors H Fisch and T Linder (Switzerland), Professor M Sanna (Italy), Professors Officers and Ozarowski (Belgium), Professor J Müller (Germany), Mr. B Hartley (UK), and Dr. L Hofmeyr (South Africa), among others. Dr. Schlemmer served as the Durban Cochlear Implant Program coordinator for eight years and is an honorary lecturer in the Department of ENT at UKZN and a research associate at the University of Pretoria’s Department of Audiology, Speech, and Language Pathology. His clinical expertise includes,

  • Head and Neck surgery, including thyroid and parathyroid procedures
  • Lateral skull base surgery for cholesteatoma, paragangliomas, vestibular schwannomas, and other benign and malignant pathology
  • Otology and Neurotology procedures including stapedotomy, Superior Semi-Circular Dehiscence (SSCD) occlusion, and endolymphatic sac decompression (ESD)
  • Cochlear implantation and other active middle ear and bone conduction implants
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Pediatric ENT including congenital neck masses and airway pathology
